CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — As National Ocean Month comes to a close, a Charleston beer parent company is giving back to a local aquatic landmark.
“The Lowcountry belongs to all of us, including our bird and animal friends,”
Island Brands USA announced an initiative to help protect the habitat of Crab Bank Island. The company, along with Free Fly and Rheos Nautical Eyewear, is sponsoring an awareness campaign to inform people about the large bird population on the island and how people can work to keep them safe.
They advise kayakers and boaters to not land on the island, as it could disrupt the birds nesting grounds. They are also donating kayaks to the Coastal Expeditions Foundation.
“We are constantly looking for ways to give back to our local communities and help protect the environment,” said Island Brands Director of Philanthropy Meghan Hansen. “The Crab Bank Steward Program, led by the efforts of the Coastal Expeditions Foundation, is a perfect combination of both — a meaningful effort to restore a local treasure that’s so important to our beloved Charleston.”
“We are thrilled with this partnership, not only because of the benefits to the sanctuary and the birds, but for the conservation leadership that Island Brands USA, Free Fly, and Rheos Nautical Eyewear are demonstrating,” added Executive Director of the Coastal Expeditions Foundation Karen Monahan.
Jenna Elliot, Co-Owner of Free Fly Apparel, said, “The birds of South Carolina are a vital component to our beautiful living shorelines and local ecosystem. We could not be more thrilled to support a project in our own backyard, The Crab Bank Steward Program, led by the Coastal Expeditions Foundation.”
“The Lowcountry belongs to all of us, including our bird and animal friends,” said Becca Berton, Co-Founder of Rheos Nautical Eyewear. “Part of our mission is to serve as a voice for the water and all who love it, and we’re honored to be part of the continued success of this coastal bird sanctuary.”
The campaign will be commemorated at the island on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
